Welcome to the School of
Humanities and Social Sciences. We are the "heart" of
your education, since we offer many foundation courses
and majors that enhance your overall education, and your

priority, and it is our goal for you to have an
excellent and rewarding educational experience at
Virginia Union University.
Graduates from the School of
Humanities and Social Sciences may receive a Bachelor of
Arts Degree in English, Mass Communications, Political
Science/Public Administration, and Religious Studies.
The Social Work program is accredited by the Council on
Social Work Education. Students graduating from this
program receive a Bachelor in Social Work (BSW). We
work in cooperation with the School of Education and
Interdisciplinary Studies for students who want to teach
English and History/Social Studies in secondary schools.
The faculty in the School of
Humanities and Social Sciences teach many of the core
courses that help to provide you with a well-rounded
education. These include English, History, Foreign
Languages, Speech and Drama, Fine Arts, Literature,
Religion, Sociology and Political Science.
While a student at Virginia
Union University, you may participate in a number of
civic engagement and University activities related to
your major. Some of these include the Political
Science Club, the Model United Nations, the Pre-Law
Society, the Social Work Club, the Christian Club, and
the Spanish Club.
Social work majors will have
an opportunity to gain valuable work-related field
instruction through participation in the senior
practicum during their senior year. Political
science/public administration majors may participate in
civic engagement activities such as tutoring in the
public schools, volunteering for non-profit
organizations that serve low-income and at-risk
children, participating in the legislative Black Caucus,
and in voter registration. Mass communication majors
have a variety of internships with television stations,
the newspaper, and magazines.
Graduates from the
