Endowed Scholarships and Awards

Through the generosity of Alumni and Friends of the University, endowed scholarships and awards are available to deserving students. THESE SCHOLARSHIPS ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO FIRST YEAR STUDENTS AND TRANSFER STUDENTS. STUDENTS MUST HAVE BEEN ENROLLED AT VIRGINIA UNION UNIVERSITY FOR A FULL ACADEMIC YEAR AND MEET THE GUIDELINES OF RESOLUTION SET UP BY THE DONORS. The following is a list of endowed scholarships and awards currently available:

Academic Excellence Endowed Scholarships. Established by the Board of Trustees of Virginia Union University for worthy and deserving students enrolled in English, foreign languages of business courses in accordance with the wishes of Mr. Arthur Ashe, Jr.

Theodore F. Adams. Established by the First Baptist Church Endowment Fund for worthy and deserving students who show academic promise in the field of religion or social work.

Alfa Laval Thermal. Established by Alfa Laval Thermal, Inc. for worthy and deserving students majoring in business.

John A. and Inez C. Bacoats. Established by the estate of Mrs. Inez C. Bacoats for deserving students who are preparing for a career in the Christian Ministry of who are majoring in Church Music.

Bank of America.  Established by Bank of America for worthy and deserving students majoring in business or education.

The Mrs. Armond A. Belle & Dr. Walton M. Belle Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established by Mrs. Armond A. Belle & Dr. Walton M. Belle, '50, to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving students.

Dr. Lillie R. Bennett. Established by Dr. Richard Bennett wishing to establish an endowed scholarship in of honor of his mother Dr. Lillie R. Bennett, for rising senior majoring in Science.

Elizabeth Coles Bouey. Established by the International Association of Ministries' Wives and Ministers' Widows, Inc., for needy and deserving students.

Michael A. Bradford. Established by Mrs. Doris A Bradford, of Richmond, Virginia, a friend of the University, in memory of her son. Michael Allison Bradford, for needy and deserving children students dedicated to Christian Service.

Dr. and Mrs. Lyman Beecher Brooks. Established by Mrs. Evelyn Brooks, '48 and her daughters in memory of Dr. Brooks, the first president of Norfolk State University, for students majoring in mathematics.

Clara Jackson Brown. Established by Mrs. P Juette Johnson Neal on May 5, 1989, wishing to establish an endowed scholarship for worthy and deserving students in memory of her dear friend.

 
 
 
 
   


Lucille Murray Brown, '50
. Established by family and friends, in honor of Dr. Brown for sophomore students majoring in teacher education who graduated from the Richmond Public School system.

Theodore R. Coots Brown, Sr. M.D.  Established by Dr. Lucille Murray Brown, ’50, a member of the VUU Board of Trustees, in memory of her husband, Theodore R. Coots Brown, Class of 1948 for worthy and deserving students majoring in the area of natural sciences that plan to pursue a career in the area of health sciences.

Benjamin F. Bunn, '35. Established by Mrs. Imogene M. Bunn in memory of her husband, Benjamin F. Bunn, pastor of the First Baptist Church and the President of the Charlottesville Chapter of the International Alumni Association, for students enrolled in the School of Theology.

The Robert G. Cabell III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation Faculty Development Fund. Established via a grant awarded by the Robert G. Cabell III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation to provide funding for faculty development activities.

Louise Miles Chubbs Endowed Scholarship. Established by Mrs. Louise Miles Chubbs to provide scholarships for deserving female students majoring in Teacher Education with first preference to members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Class of 1924. Established by the alumni of the class headed by former trustee Dr. William H. Johnson of Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, to benefit the needy junior or senior students.

Class of 1939. Established by the Class of 1939 on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary Reunion, for deserving students.

Class of 1955. Established by the Class of 1955 on the occasion of their 50th anniversary for worthy and deserving students.

Commonwealth Chapter of the Links, Inc. Established by the Commonwealth Chapter of the Links, Inc. Richmond, VA for worthy and deserving students pursing careers in education.

Dorothy N. Cowling. Established by Dr. Dorothy N. Cowling for worthy and deserving seniors majoring in Education and Psychology.

Jerry C. Crews, '55. Established by Mrs. Margaret C. Crews, along with family and friends in memory of her husband, with preference given to a Junior male student living in Richmond, VA.

Mrs. Mary & Dr. Charles E. Cummings Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established by Mrs. Mary & Dr. Charles E. Cummings to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving students.

Frances Evans Cunningham-Corlette. Established by her husband, Ralph Corlette, for worthy and deserving students.

Stanley C. Davis '29. Established by the Davis family, in memory of Mr. Davis, who culminated a lifelong devotion to his alma mater, for deserving students.

Roland "Duke" Ealey Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established by the Virginia State Legislative Caucus in memory of Roland "Duke" Ealey to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving students.

Ebony Ladies.  Established by the Ebony Ladies, Inc. for worthy and deserving female students.

N. A. Eggleston, Sr. Fund. Established by family and the friends of N. A. Eggleston, Sr., Hotel Proprietor and Manager, to support the educational initiatives annually of one business major sophomore student by defraying the cost of textbooks and related educational material purchased from the University Bookstore.

Dr. John Malcus Ellison, '17. Established by the congregation of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Reedville, VA for worthy and deserving students.

Endowed Teacher Education Scholarship. Established by an anonymous donor, who is a long time friend and supporter of the University, for industrious and deserving sophomores and juniors majoring in the field of teacher education.

Herbert M. Fillebrown. Established from the Estate of Mrs. Sara Lerch Fillebrown for worthy and deserving students.

Ada Virginia Foster Fisher. Established by Dr. Ada M. Fisher in memory of her mother for the graduating valedictorian and the graduating senior majoring in French with the Highest GPA.

Follet College Stores. Established by Follet College Stores for Worthy and deserving students.

Eva Madeline Black Frazier Scholarship. Established by Mrs. Eva Frazier Jordan, Class of 1934 for worthy and deserving students from New York City.

Thomas Frazier, Jr. & Elsie Frazier Gholson. Established by Mrs. Eva Frazier Jordan of New York City for worthy and deserving students from New York City.

Harlow Fullwood, Jr. ’77.  Established from the Estate of Harlow Fullwood, Jr., Class of 1977 for worthy and deserving students.

Mary Catherine Fultz. Established by the estate of Mrs. Mary Catherine Fultz to procure books chosen by the English Department for the Library.

Jarreau Bakari Garrett. Established by Allen R. Garrett, MD and Cheryl Smith Garrett, PhD in memory of their son, a 2004 graduate for worthy and deserving students majoring in history and political science.

Dr. and Mrs. M. Gordon. Established by two friends of the University residing in Richmond, Virginia, for junior of senior students enrolled in the Sydney Lewis School of Business Administration.

Lance Corporal Troy Lorenzo Gregory. Established by friends in recognition of his dedicated service to his country as a United States Marine in the Persian Gulf where he gave his life for freedom on February 25, 1991, for deserving students.

Richard and Caroline T. Gwathmey. Established by the Richard and Caroline T. Gwathmey Memorial Trust for worthy and deserving students.

Calvin Bradford Hairston '55. Established by Mrs. Louise J Hairston in memory of her husband to assist Afro American Students majoring in Science.

Jean L. Harris, M.D. Scholarship Fund. Established by Dr. Jean L. Harris to Provide scholarships for deserving student majoring in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Dr. Ruth C. Harris. Established by W. K. Kellogg Foundation and family and friends to honor Dr. Ruth Coles Harris for worthy and deserving students enrolled in the Sydney Lewis School of Business.

Maryland Mallette Hayes. Established by Miss Thelma M. Hayes, Class of 1942 in memory of her mother for worthy and deserving students enrolled in the Sydney Lewis School of Business.

William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Established by the Board of Directors for the William R. Hearst Foundation for the students who demonstrate financial need and who intend to reside in the United States after completion of their studies.

J. Raymond Henderson '24. Established by Mrs. Henderson of Los Angeles, California, in memory of her husband, a long-time Baptist minister in Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, New York, and California, for students interested in the Christian ministry.

Dr. and Mrs. John B. Henderson. Established by Mrs. Joyce Waller Baden for worthy and deserving students interested in the Christian ministry and/or majoring in elementary education.

Scott L. Henderson, Jr. Established by bequest of Mr. Henderson, university Photographer for 30 years, and gifts of family members: the late Mr. And Mrs. Wendell T. Foster, Sr.; Mr. Wendell T. Zenobia Gilpin Henderson. Established by the Virginia Union University alumnae of the Alpha Eta Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in memory of an outstanding Richmond physician and social worker for students evidencing a potential for careers in public service.

Tracy Holmes. Established by Mrs. Opal Holmes for worthy and deserving students.

Curtis Irby Memorial.  Established by Commander Curtis M. Irby, Supply Corps, United States Navy in memory of his father, Mr. Curtis Irby, Class of 1968 to assist students who are working parents going to school full or part-time.

Alice R. Jackson Scholarship Fund. Established by Mrs. Alice R. Jackson to provide scholarships to deserving students.

Samuel Horace James, Sr. Established by Dr. & Mrs. Allix B. James wishing to honor his father. The award is made annually to the Valedictorian of the Graduating Class of the School of Theology.

James River Valley Chapter of the Links, Inc. Established by the James River Valley Chapter of the Links, Inc. for a female junior or senior matriculating in a program that will lead to a teaching endorsement.

Anna & Willie Jones. Established by Mrs. Carlene Jones Davis and family for worthy and deserving students.

Arlene Newsome Jones Library Fund. Established by Mrs. Arlene Newsome Jones, '53 to purchase books for the University Library.

Mary Etta Jones. Established by Mrs. Arlethia Jones Woodard, Class of 1939 in memory of her mother for worthy and deserving students.

Dr. Mary Elisabeth Johnson. Established by the bequest of Dr. Johnson, Professor of French and outstanding faculty member, for travel and study by students and faculty in the fields of humanities and international relations.

Eva Frazier Jordan.  Established by Mrs. Eva Frazier Jordan from New York City, Class of 1934 for worthy and deserving students from New York City.

Dr. and Mrs. Francis A. Kornegay, '41. Established by a former trustee and honorary degree recipient and his wife, the daughter of Dr. John M. Ellison, '17, fourth president of Virginia Union University, to help a student enrolled in the University.

Eugenie and George Khleif Endowed Fund. Established by Dr. Ramsey G. Kleff in honor of his parents Eugenie and George Khleif to subsidize the cost of attendance at professional conferences for students majoring in the Department of History and Political Science.

Dr. Ramsey G. Kleff.  Established by Mrs. Sheila M. Kleff for worthy and deserving students majoring in political science or public administration with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The Reverend and Mrs. Heywood G. Knight. Established by bequest of an alumnus of the Class of 1943, former Professor of English and Advisor for Minority Affairs, York College, York, Pennsylvania, for a needy and deserving student.

Dr. George McDonald, '23. Established by the Miles W. Connor Alumni Chapter of Baltimore, Maryland, and Mrs. McDonald in memory of a dedicated physician in the City of Baltimore and in the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II, for students from the Baltimore area.

Dr. Henry J. McGuinn. Established by alumni, who debated under Dr. McGuinn during his 52-year tenure as teacher at the University, for members of the Debate Team or junior and senior students majoring in the Social Sciences.

Reverend H. H. Mitchell.  Established by Mr. Joseph P. and Mrs. Jacqueline Mitchell Lawson in honor of her grandfather, who served as President of the Virginia Baptist Convention form 1890-1899 for recruiting of M.Div students.

H. Reginald Mitchell. Established by his wife, Mrs. Pauline A. Mitchell for worthy and deserving students.

Reverend Louis D. Mitchell. Established by Mr. Joseph P. and Mrs. Jacqueline Mitchell Lawson in honor of her father to prepare ordained clergy for church ministries.

Charles Oakley Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established by the Virginia Union University in recognition of Mr. Oakley's numerous contributions to the University to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving students.

Dudley Parker, Jr., ’68. Established by Mrs. Patricia Lewis Parker, Class of 1969 and Tisa E. Parker for worthy and deserving students majoring in education or business administration.

John O. Peterson, Sr. Education. Established by the Alfred Street Baptist Church, Alexandria VA wishing to establish an endowed scholarship in of honor of their pastor Dr. John O. Peterson, Sr., for a VUU student with a BS or BA who is enrolled in the School of Theology.

Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. Established by the Abyssinian Baptist Church in memory of its former pastor and outstanding Virginia Union University alumnus of the Class of 1892, for students in the School of Theology.

George Powell Scholarship for Academic Achievement in Science and Mathematics.  Established by Dr. Angela T. Powell, Class of 1985 in honor of her father, who attended and taught at VUU for a junior or senior student majoring in biology, chemistry, natural science or math to help defray the cost of applying to professional school.

Frank B. Priestly, Educator Fund. Established by the family and friends of Frank B. Priestly, Class of 1950 for worthy and deserving students enrolled in the School of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Reverend Dr. Samuel Proctor, '42. Established by the Class of 1960 in honor of Dr. Proctor, the fifth president of Virginia Union University, on the occasion of their 30th Class Reunion, for worthy and deserving students.

The Garnett Ryland Prize in Chemistry. Endowed by Mr. Charles H. Ryland of Warsaw, Virginia, son of Dr. Garnett Ryland, former Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Richmond and trustee of Virginia Union University, awarded annually to the top graduate in chemistry.

Samuel F. & Albanie J. Scott Library Collection. Established by Dr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Scott to purchase books for the library.

The Yvonne M. Simmons & Dr. S. Dallas Simmons Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established by The Yvonne M. Simmons & Dr. S. Dallas Simmons to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving students.

Dr. Wendell C. Somersville. Established by the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention in honor of Dr. Wendell C. Somersville for more than 55 years of service, to perpetuate his interest encouraging young men and women to prepare themselves for the Christian ministry.

Virginia State Baptist Usher Union. Established by the Ushers with first preference given to sons or daughters of ushers and then to Virginia students from areas covered by the Union: cities of Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, Williamsburg, and Danville, and counties of Halifax, Hanover, and Mecklenberg.

Virginia Union University Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established via the Lilly Endowment/UNCF HBCU Program to provide scholarships for worthy and deserving students.

Virginia Union University National Alumni Association.  Established by the Virginia Union University National Alumni Association for worthy and deserving students.

Theresa C. Walden Memorial. Established by Drs. Renita and David M. Randolph for worthy and deserving students with a 3.0 GPA who have demonstrated service to the community.

Linda K. Walker, '68, Memorial. Established by Mrs. Audrey J. Walker of Hampton, Virginia, in memory of her daughter for needy junior students majoring in Social Work , her daughter's chosen career.

Aaron O. Wells Pre-Med. Established by Dr. Aaron O. Wells, Class of 1943 for junior or senior students with a 3.0 GPA and who perform community service.
