School of Humanities & Social Sciences

Raymond Pierre Hylton, Ph.D.

Greetings from the School of Humanities & Social Sciences at Virginia Union University. The School consists of four separate departments: Communication and Media Arts; Social Work; Political Science & Public Administration; and Religious Studies.

Drawing upon the strength and dedication of our faculty and staff, and our 140 year plus tradition of serving the student body, the School commits itself to an ethic of caring; to helping our students, at every juncture of their academic life, to discover and to fully realize their educational and career goals. Further, we view our help to the students as a lifetime commitment – a commitment extending beyond graduation, in keeping with the University’s focus in forging the “VUU Family”, encompassing all the varied and unique individuals who have a contributing stake in its mission.

The School is justly proud of its notable alumni; among them individuals of the caliber of Samuel Gravely, the nation’s first African-American to attain the rank of admiral in the U.S. Navy; and Dr. Charles Spurgeon Johnson, President of Fisk University and one of the major figures of the Harlem Renaissance; and the notable historian Raymond Gavins. And we are equally proud of the leaders and achievers that graduate every year. We invite you to come and visit us and to join in a learning experience that is at the same time challenging, creative, and fulfilling.

It is our hope that you will come to know that at Virginia Union University you are valued as an individual, and can count on a special measure of personal attention and concern equaled by few, if any, comparable institutions.
