The 1993 Charles Oakley Golf Tournament

What started out in the early 1990's as a golf outing with former VUU Athletic Director James Battle, Basketball Coach Dave Robbins and a few of their friends has turned out to be one of the most prestigious fundraisers for Virginia Union UUniversity. After a couple of years of playing together, Coach Robbins invited NBA star and former VUU Panther Charles Oakley to play with the group. Hence, the 1993 Charles oakley Golf Tournamnet was born. In addition to Oakley, a number of professional athletes participated in the tournament.

In 1996, through the efforts of Anthony Manning, former Vice President for Development, Universal Ford became the title sponsor for the tournamnet and the name officially changed to the Virginia Union University/Universal Ford Celebrity Challenge. Mr. Harry Harris, CEO for Universal Ford, and his wife and children are regular participants in the Challenge. Since its inception, he Challenge has generated more than $150,000.00, which supports the Charles Oakley Endowed Schloarship Fund.

In addition to generating funds, the Challenge has attracted several celebrity participants over the years. They include Anthony Bonner, Les Brown, Steve Bullock, Chris Chiles, Michael Curry, Terry Davis, Alex Deegan, Phil FOrd, Jr., Ron Harper, Gerald Henderson, Drew Hill, Willie Lanier, Jon Lugbill, Johnny Newman, Scotty Pippen, Ralp Sampson, John Starkes, Rob Ukrop, and Ben Wallace.
