Award-Winning Journalist to Speak at Virginia Union

(Richmond, VA) -- Journalist Alison Stewart will present her book entitled First Class: The Legacy of Dunbar, America’s First Black Public High School in the Wilder Library Lecture Hall on the campus of Virginia Union University on October 30 at 6:00 p.m.

Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. is the alma mater of the first black member of the presidential cabinet, the first black graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, and the first black army general. It played a major role in establishing the black middle class, but today the school is in crisis. Stewart’s book takes a critical look at Dunbar’s fate as a microcosm of the country’s greater education system.

Alison Stewart’s 20-year career includes anchoring and reporting for MTV, PBS, NBC News, ABC News, and CBS News. The presentation will include a book signing and reception. The program is sponsored by the James River Valley Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.
