Virginia Union Professor Announces Art Exhibition

(Richmond, VA) – Virginia Union University art professor Sukenya Best will display her exhibition “Dancing Ink” in the Main Gallery of Artspace, located at Zero East 4th Street, from January 24th through February 23rd. The imagery for Best’s 8 feet by 5 feet monoprints is a combination of dance and print, with recurring symbols of dancing footprints. A live dance performance related to the exhibition will be held during the Opening Reception on January 24th from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Best describes her work as an autobiographical link to her family’s history in the Caribbean Islands, New York City, and Central Virginia. The artist received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Best was recently selected as a "Women in the Arts" 2013 Honoree by Style Weekly. She was recognized with eight other women for elevating Richmond culture. "They are dedicated to their craft and to moving the arts forward in Richmond and beyond," said Style Weekly editors. "We honor these inspiring leaders who have made significant contributions to the vibrant fabric of Richmond's arts and culture."

Gallery hours for Best’s Artspace exhibit are Tuesday through Sunday from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
