Virginia Union Receives $1.8 Million Upward Bound Grant

(Richmond, VA) -  The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $1,867,500 to Virginia Union University’s Upward Bound Program in order to operate the program for the next five years.  Virginia Union was one of 780 programs funded nationwide from a total of 1,594 applications submitted.

“We will tirelessly work to ensure that the students served will have the tools they need to successfully finish secondary education, enroll in and complete postsecondary educational studies, and ultimately forge a new legacy for themselves and their families,” said Virginia Union Upward Bound Director Rev. Nikita C. Garris-Watson.

Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.  Thirty-four Upward Bound students from Richmond public high schools are currently on the Virginia Union campus completing a five-week summer college preparation program.
