Virginia Union University Announces Commencement Speaker

(Richmond, VA) – Actor/Director/Producer Delroy Lindo will deliver the 2013 Commencement address at Virginia Union University.  The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 on Hovey Field.  Approximately 328 graduates are expected to receive degrees.  This includes 175 students from the undergraduate program and 153 students from the graduate school of theology.

Born in England in 1952, Lindo has had many memorable roles in film, including Heist, The Cider House Rules, Clockers, Crooklyn, Malcolm X, This Christmas, Gone in 60 Seconds, Ransom, Get Shorty, A Life Less Ordinary, and Feeling Minnesota. 

On television, Lindo was most recently featured in the Fox series The Chicago Code. 

On Broadway, Lindo appeared as Herald Loomis in August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, receiving Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations; and Master Harold and the Boys (Broadway and National Tour).

On Friday, May 10, Virginia Union will hold its Baccalaureate Service at 6:00 p.m. in the Allix B. James Chapel of Coburn Hall.  The speaker will be Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, pastor of the nationally renowned Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York, and president of the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Old Westbury.  Dr. Butts was one of the founders, and is the current chairman of Abyssinian Development Corporation, a comprehensive, community-based not for profit organization, responsible for over $600 million in housing and commercial development in Harlem.
