The Office of Residence Life at Virginia
Union University (Richmond, Virginia) invites qualified
applicants for the Residence Hall Director position. This is a
professional staff position responsible for administrative,
educational and developmental duties as it pertains to the
safety and welfare for up to 200 students. The Residence Hall
Director position is a full-time, ten-month live-in position
provided with a furnished on-campus apartment plus utilities and
local telephone service, on-campus meals and laundry facilities
at no cost. Position includes University benefits. Salary for
this position is commensurate with experience.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Administration
-
Knowledge of and ability to
apply all policies and procedures in the Residence Life
Handbook and the RA Handbook.
-
Maintain regular office hours on
a weekly basis (minimum of 4 per day; hours should meet the
needs of most students).
-
Track and summarize hall
incidents and fines.
University
Relations (Campus Police, Facilities & Buildings and Grounds,
Judicial Affairs, etc.)
-
Work cooperatively with
Buildings and Grounds to assure the physical environment is
maintained at an optimal level.
-
Report, track and actively
follow through with work order requests.
-
Work cooperatively with Campus
Police for investigations, incident reporting, entry and
search (emergency and authorized entry)
-
Appropriately document policy
infractions and incidents and forward them to the Director
of Residence Life.

Work cooperatively with other
University areas as situations arise.
Student
Development
-
Establish an environment
conducive to the academic success and personal growth of
each resident.
-
Establish a positive
working/living relationship between residents and staff
members.
-
Be knowledgeable of student
development theories
-
Hall Director works with the
student staff and residents to develop a student-governing
agency, which will coordinate educational, social, cultural
and recreational activities within the area.
-
Serve as advisor to hall council
to develop educational, social, cultural and recreational
activities within the residence hall.
Student
Discipline/Policy Enforcement
-
Consistently follow procedures
for handling violations and enforcing University policies
and procedures as outlined in the Student and Residence Life
handbooks.
-
Investigate cases of vandalism
and other damages to the residence hall(s) and endeavor to
recover replacement costs from responsible person(s).

Staff
Supervision/Development
-
Assist with the selection,
training, supervision and evaluation of paraprofessional
staff.
-
Develop an appropriate team
building/staff unity attitude among all staff members.
-
Assist with the fall and spring
training and in-service programs throughout the year.
Other
Responsibilities
-
Serve on or provide leadership
for one or more Residence Life adjunct areas. Adjunct areas
are facilities management & development, student leadership
& development, community building & programming and
information technology & development
-
Work on a rotating, on-call
weekend duty schedule. Be available for extended work days,
weekend duty, activities and emergencies.
-
Serve on University wide
committees or Student Affairs committees.
-
Present or attend appropriate
in-service programs and conferences for continued
professional and personal growth.
-
Perform other duties as assigned
by the Director of Residence Life.
Required Qualifications:
-
Master’s degree in Educational
Leadership, Higher Education Administration or Counseling
preferred or Bachelor’s degree with related residence life
experience
-
Ability to explain policies and
procedures and work problems to supervisor and negotiate
opposing views (rephrase)
-
Ability to produce reports and
letters and work as a team member in directing and
motivating staff
-
Ability to mediate disputes and
establish rapport with students
-
Ability to analyze mechanical
problems and prioritize work load
-
Ability to promote a living
environment conducive to learning
-
Ability to determine appropriate
response(s) to student oriented crisis
-
Ability to advise residents and
staff personally and academically
-
Ability to plan and work under
pressure, coordinate numerous activities, and represent the
department in University and Student Affairs function.

Knowledge of University
philosophy with regards to student development.

Basic administrative skills,
personnel management, and knowledge of budgeting
