Ways to Give

Gifts to the New Era of Excellence Annual Fund for Virginia Union University may be made in several ways, including outright gifts, pledges, and testamentary or life-income arrangements.

Major annual fund pledges (i.e., $50,000+) may be paid within a five-year period, although special arrangements can be made in exceptional circumstances.

Gifts may be made with cash, appreciated securities, real estate or other marketable property, life insurance policies, and other assets. A transfer of appreciated securities (stocks or bonds) to Virginia Union University allows the donor to make a gift and receive a charitable deduction equal to the full fair market value of the securities. The donor pays no capital gains tax on the gift.

Donors may choose to support the Annual Fund through bequest provisions in their wills and possibly combine this deferred commitment with an outright gift.

Gifts providing lifetime income to the donor and his or her beneficiary may be made in a variety of ways: unitrusts, gift annuities, annuity trusts, and other means. Such gifts provide significant financial and tax advantages to the donor and often enable an individual to make a gift to VUU much greater than he or she thought possible.

Gifts-in-kind of equipment, computer software, library materials, and other items that meet identified needs will be gratefully received.

Matching Gifts donors may double or triple their gifts, if they work for one or more than 1,500 companies offering a “Matching Gift” program. Some companies will match the gift of a spouse or retired employee. For a matching gifts application form or more information, check with your corporate personnel or benefits office.

Honorary & Memorial Gifts in memory or in honor of a relative or a friend is a generous and thoughtful way to recognize a person’s life and accomplishments. When an honorary or memorial gift is made, the Office of Institutional Advancement will notify the honoree or next of kin and the gift is administered as the contributor specifies.
