Text Box: During the month of July 2005, freshman students will arrive to the Virginia Union University (VUU) campus eager to pursue a higher education degree.  Freshman students often are unaware of the many challenges facing them.
The University’s Academic Empowerment Institutes have been established to help provide freshman students with an opportunity to get help with the rigors of college assignments and test taking.  
The Academic Empowerment Institutes have been showcased over the past years and many of its students earn Text Box: placement on the University’s Dean’s Lists.  Dean’s List students can take advantage of applying for academic scholarships.  Academic Empowerment Institute participants can learn more about academic scholarships when they participant in the Institute.  
The Academic Empowerment Institutes provide tutorial, academic advisement, counseling,, college orientation, educational resources, and other types of  college survival services and activities.   Students interested in participating in the Academic Empowerment Text Box: Text Box: #1:  Avoid absences.  Attend all classes regularly.

#2: Seek tutorial support for difficult classes.  Look for tutorial schedules posted throughout the campus and check online.

#3:  Pick your friends wisely.  Select friends who are interested in doing well at VUU.
Text Box: #4: Maintain a positive attitude.  It is said: You are what you think about most of the time.  Whatever you persistently allow to occupy your thoughts will magnify in your life.  By focusing on academic progress and success you will enable these things to appear in your life. 

#5: Meet with your major advisor often  each semester for  academic advisement and support.

#6: Master the art of studying.  Locate a quiet location to study, think, read, and complete assignments.

The Academic Empowerment Institutes is a federally funded program that addresses the University’s goal to provide academic and administrative support programs and services that empower students for success and maximize their potential for continued personal growth.
