The Academic Empowerment Summer InstituteThe Academic Empowerment Summer Institute (AESI) is offered by Virginia Union University’s Division of Academic Affairs and operated by the University’s widely recognized Academic Empowerment Center. Virginia Union University has maintained a reputation for excellence and innovation in education. Among its many innovations are specialized academic and support services that meets the needs of students at different levels of ability and academic preparation. The purpose of the AESI is to prepare provisionally admitted students for the challenges of higher education and to ensure students’ optimal performance and achievement at the University. The AESI is a five week residential summer college preparation program to strengthen basic skills in English, mathematics, and college survival, build academic and support service systems, enhance personal and social preparation, in addition to learn about campus life and resources. AESI students will enroll in three courses and participate in professional and personal development seminars, daily library visitations for the completion of assignments using computer technology, weekly cultural, fun, and educational activities on and away from the campus, and weekend group meetings. Students participating in AESI will be expected to adhere to the rigorous academic schedule and activities conducted throughout the program. Student curfews are set for Sunday through Thursday 11pm, Friday and Saturday 1:30am. Students are expected to attend all classes and activities. The program director must approve all absences. Students are expected to display appropriate conduct on and off campus. The penalty for inappropriate behavior or conduct can result in dismissal from the AESI.
