CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF TEACHER EDUCATION

 

The Evelyn Syphax School of Education, Psychology, and Interdisciplinary Studies at Virginia Union University seeks an innovative and experienced leader to chair the Department of Teacher Education.  The Department Chair will be hired at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a ten month appointment beginning August 2013. 

Description of Duties:  Department Chairs are full time faculty members who are given release time and compensation for their administrative responsibilities.  This is a 10-month administrative position; however, the first year administrative responsibilities may be extended 1-2 months.  The Department Chair is responsible for overall leadership and administration of the department including oversight of academic programs, faculty review, course scheduling, budget, support of faculty productivity and professional development, and facilitation of innovation.  The Chair also serves as the Compliance Officer/College Verification Officer who determines whether an applicant for licensure has completed a state-approved preparation program at the undergraduate level.

Required Qualifications: Earned Doctorate from an accredited institution with a specialty in one of the teaching areas represented within the department, a distinguished record of teaching and scholarship that merits appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, administrative experience in an academic unit, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, budget management skills and a demonstrated commitment to educational and cultural needs of a diverse population.  Desired qualifications include a strong experience with the NCATE accreditation process and experience with seeking and obtaining external funding.
