WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AT VIRGINIA UNION UNIVERSITY?

The judicial system exists to respond to alleged violations of campus policies and regulations by students or student organizations.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF GOING THROUGH THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM?

Generally, the process is as follows:

  • Report of the violation is made.
  • Investigation of the violation
  • Determination is made as to whether the report warrants a judicial hearing.
  • If warranted, a notice of judicial hearing is sent to student via VUU

E-mail.

  • Judicial hearing is held as scheduled
  • The judicial hearing board makes determination of responsibility.
  • Sanction is issued (if found responsible)

 

CAN WITNESSES BE PRESENT AT MY HEARING?

Yes, the accused student will have 48 hours to present names and written statements of their witnesses. The accused student is responsible to inform their witnesses about the time, date, and place of the hearing.

 

WHO ELSE MAY ATTEND MY HEARING?

Judicial hearings are highly confidential and are closed to the public. However, the accused student is entitled to be accompanied by a representative of their choice for silent support only. 

 

IF I GET INTO TROUBLE OFF CAMPUS, WILL I HAVE TO GO BEFORE THE JUDICIAL BOARD?     

Any student, who commits a violation of local, state, or federal laws and/or engages in activities off or on the campus, which are of the nature to reflect negatively on the good name of the University, may be subject to a judicial hearing.

 

WHAT IS A HEARING BOARD?

A hearing board is a selection of students, faculty and staff who adjudicate or hear appeals of cases of student misconduct on the University campus.

 

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT HEARING BOARDS?

The Student Conduct Review Board adjudicates cases that are the result of violations of the student handbook.

 

The Judicial Appeals Board hears appeal cases that have been adjudicated as a result of violations of the student handbook

 

 

HOW ARE HEARING BOARD MEMBERS SELECTED?

 

·  Student members are appointed through the Office of Student Leadership Development.

·  Faculty members are appointed by the Faculty Senate.

·  Staff members are appointed by the Vice Presidents of their respective areas.

 

 

WHAT IS THE CAMPUS MEDIATION PROGRAM?

 

Campus Mediation is a dispute resolution program designed to resolve problems, which develop between students. The individuals work with trained mediators and work towards a mutually agreeable solution.

 

 

HOW ARE CAMPUS MEDIATORS SELECTED?

 

Campus Mediators are students, faculty and staff volunteers who are trained to mediate. Students who are interested in participating must contact the Director of Student Leadership Development. Faculty and staff may contact the Director of Judicial Affairs.

 

 

WHAT IS THE TERM OF SERVICE FOR HEARING BOARD MEMBERS AND CAMPUS MEDIATORS?

 

The term of service is one academic year (fall-summer semesters).

 

 

HOW DO I APPLY TO SERVE IN THE OFFICE OF JUDICIAL AFFAIRS?

 

For appointment to the Student Conduct Review Board or Judicial Appeal Board:

Students who are interested in applying must secure and complete an application from the Office of Leadership Development or the Office of Judicial Affairs. Faculty members may notify their Faculty Senate. Staff members may notify the Vice President of their respective area or the Director of Judicial Affairs.

 

To serve as a volunteer Campus Mediator:

Students may apply through the Office of Student Leadership Development.

Students, Faculty and Staff may apply through the Office of Judicial Affairs
