Did You Know...?

Did you know . . . the important person who made this statement? "But for Virginia Union, I could never have been governor of any place or any thing. . . . I could never have really believed in myself."

That was L. Douglas Wilder, VUU class of '51 and former Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He said this in his remarks at the 1997 dedication of the new L. Douglas Wilder Library and Learning Resource Center on campus.

Did you know . . . about VUU and NBA star Charles Oakley?

Yep. NBA star Charles Oakley ('85), who plays for the New York Knicks, is a Unionite! Oakley was the Panthers' power forward and was named Player of the Year for 1985 before being drafted by the Chicago Bulls. Our pride shows in the VUU bookstore, where we sell Oakley's jersey (#34)!

Did you know . . . about VUU and Lumpkin's Jail?

Believe it or not, the original site of what is now Virginia Union University was a former slave jail known as Lumpkin's Jail.

Did you know . . . about VUU's success stories?

We're proud to say that 22 Virginia Union University alumni have served as college or university presidents, including CEOs at Chicago Theological Seminary, Fisk University, North Carolina A&T University, and Virginia Union University.

Did you know . . . what Belgium's 1939-40 World's Fair exhibit has to do with VUU?

Belgium's exhibit at the 1939-40 World's Fair in New York was reconstructed on the Virginia Union University campus in 1941 under the direction of the original architect. The building, dubbed the Belgian Friendship Building, housed the University's library until January 1997, and it still serves the VUU community today.

Did you know . . . one of VUU's claims to fame as an HBCU?

One of the many impressive facts about Virginia Union University is that it's still the only historically black institution with a police training academy on campus. The University is home to Richmond's Police Training Academy, which also serves as headquarters for VUU's Criminology/Criminal Justice academic program.

Did you know . . . that VUU wasn't always VUU?

Virginia Union University was founded in 1865, but it wasn't known by this name until 1899. That's when Wayland College & Seminary and Richmond Theological Institute merged to form Virginia Union University.

If you still have questions after reviewing the VUU site, please e-mail our office of Admissions.
