Virginia
Union University’s Residence Life Office invites energetic,
motivated candidates to apply for the Residence Hall Director
position.
Objective/Purpose:
To ensure the efficient operation of the residence hall, including
administrative, educational and developmental responsibilities;
ensuring the safety and welfare for up to 200 students.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ensure
the development and implementation of residence hall programs
by the Resident Assistants
- Assume
responsibility for several collateral assignments such as
committee work on RA and professional staff training or
selection, judicial board, RA Council, Staff Manual revision,
and others as assigned.
- Work
collaboratively with other departments in the University
- Serve
as Residence Life representative on Student Affair's program
Teams. Participate in Student Affairs Staff Development,
other University Staff Developments, and staff development
opportunities off campus
- Implement
policies and procedures as defined by Residence Life
- Participate
in University programs and committees
- Maintain
frequent and regular contact with RAs through individual
meetings and follow up phone contact
- Supervise
the facility management of the assigned residence hall
- Serve
as "on-call" personnel for Residence Life on rotating
business
- Participate
in selection and training of new residence hall and professional
staff
- Attend
training sessions and staff meetings as requested
- Respond
to critical incidents and resident interventions
- Other
responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Residence
Life
Required
Qualifications:
- Ability
to read and understand manuals and policies
- Ability
to perform basic math
- Ability
to explain policies and procedures and work problems to
supervisor and negotiate opposing views
- Skill
in producing reports and letters and working as a team member
in directing and motivating staff
- Skill
in mediating disputes and establishing rapport with students
- Skill
in analyzing mechanical problems and prioritizing work load
- Skill
in promoting a living environment conducive to learning
- Skill
in determining appropriate response to student oriented
crisis
- Skill
in advising residents and staff personally and academically

- Ability
to plan and work under pressure, coordinate numerous activities,
and represent the department in
- University
and Student Affairs function.
- Knowledge
of University philosophy with regards to student development.
- Basic
administrative skills, personnel management, and knowledge
of budgeting
Preferred
Qualifications:
- Masters
degree in Student Personnel or related field
- Previous
residence hall supervisory experience
Supervisory
Responsibilities: The Residence Hall Director supervises
and evaluates a minimum of three Resident Assistants and work-study
office assistants.
Position
Type and Work Year: The Residence Hall Director position
is a full-time, ten-month live-in position.
Compensation:
Salary for this position is commensurate with experience.
The Resident Hall Director is provided with an on-campus furnished
apartment plus utilities, local telephone service, a meal
plan, and laundry facilities at no cost. Position includes
University benefits.
