What is the purpose of the judicial system at Virginia Union University?
The judicial system exists to respond to alleged violations of campus policies and regulations by students or student organizations.

What is the judicial structure at VUU?
The groups within the judicial structure are the Student Conduct Review Board, the Judicial Appeals Board and the Campus Mediation Program.

What is the Student Conduct Review Board?
The Student Conduct Review Board adjudicates cases of alleged violations of the Standards of Conduct, as outlined in the VUU Student Handbook, involving both individual students and organizations. The Board is made up of students, faculty and staff of the University.

What is the Judicial Appeals Board?
The Judicial Appeals Board serves as a judiciary panel for all appeals. This board is composed of students, faculty and staff of the University. Any student found responsible for a violation by the Student Conduct Review Board shall have the right to appeal.

What is the Campus Mediation Program?
Campus Mediation is a dispute resolution program designed to resolve problems that develop between students. The individuals work with trained mediators toward a mutually agreeable solution. Mediation is voluntary and quite effective.

What is the process of going through the judicial system?
Generally, the process is as follows:

 

• Report of the violation is made.
• Investigation of the violation
• Determination is made as to whether the report warrants a judicial hearing.
• If warranted, a notice of judicial hearing is sent to student via VUU E-mail.
• Judicial hearing is held as scheduled
• The judicial hearing board makes determination of responsibility.
• Sanction is issued (if found responsible)

Can witnesses be present at my hearing?
Yes, the accused student will have 48 hours to present names and written statements of their witnesses. The

 
 
 
 
 

accused student is responsible to inform their witnesses about the time, date, and place of the hearing.

Who else may attend my hearing?
Judicial hearings are highly confidential and are closed to the public. However, the accused student is entitled to be accompanied by a representative of their choice for silent support only.

If I get into trouble off-campus, will I have to go before the Judicial Board?
Any student who commits a violation of local, state, or federal laws and/or engages in activities off or on the campus, which are of the nature to reflect negatively on the good name of the University, may be subject to a judicial hearing.

Who is the Director of Judicial Affairs? Where is the office located?
Mrs. Nina L. Wells serves as Director. Her office is located in the Henderson Center within the Office of Student Affairs.

How can I become a member of one of the judicial boards or the campus mediation program?
To become a member of one of the judicial boards or campus mediation, you must first be a member of the Student Leadership Development Program. In addition, you must have at least a 2.75 G.P.A. and be in good standing with the University. All members must complete a training program and attend continuing education workshops held through out the academic year.
