Job Description
JOB TITLE: Director, University Counseling
Center
REPORTS TO: Vice
President for Student Affairs
The Director of the
University Counseling Center is responsible for providing group and individual
counseling to students enrolled at Virginia Union University. This includes taking responsibility for
crisis management, consultation, and educational programming to support student
development.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate all aspects of the services of the
Counseling and Student Development Center.
- Provide counseling services for students.
- Coordinate, advise, train and supervise the Peer
Counselors Association.
- Manage, supervise, and prepare the annual budget
of the Counseling and Student Development Center.
- Evaluate satisfaction of counseling services and
education programs/seminar.
- Serve on University-wide and departmental
committees as assigned.
- Collaborate with the University Health Center
with regard to services provided to mutual student clients.
- Conduct exit interviews and maintain records of
all students that officially withdraw from the University.
- Provide leadership for monitoring student needs
and the development/modifications of Center programs to meet those needs.
- Participate in the University’s crisis
intervention services and referral of students.
- Collaborate with residence halls to identify
student needs.
- Conduct intelligence, personality & career
assessments as deemed appropriate for client needs.
- Implement a system of referrals for students to
be used by faculty, resident hall directors, and the general university
staff. (i.e. conduct intake
interviews and maintain progress notes, etc.)
- Responsible for and supervise operation of the
office (inventory, ordering of supplies, filing, etc.).
- Consult with faculty and administration
regarding interests, needs and problems of students.
- Make referrals to psychiatrists and other
professional services to address student needs.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree (Doctorate
Preferred) in counseling psychology, counseling education or related area.
- Five years professional staff experience
preferred, including a minimum of two years administrative experience in
student counseling in a higher education setting or mental health agency.
- Demonstrated management and administrative
skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing educational
programs, consultation, and mediation.
- Demonstrated writing and conceptual skills.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the unique needs of
minorities and women.
- Demonstrated active interest in participating in
professional organizations, i.e., membership, offices held, writing and/or
program presentation.
