Students who participate in the Leadership Development Program are exemplary citizens who will develop skills, which will make them exemplary role models and leaders. Members of the program will be in good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing (minimum GPA of 2.5).

Members of the Leadership Development Program will:

  • Be in good Academic, financial and disciplinary standing (minimum G.P.A. of 2.5);
  • Develop skills to work with diverse populations;
  • Exhibit a positive attitude;
  • Be involved in campus or community extra-curricular development;
  • Be interested in community service;
  • Refine existing leadership skills and gain new skills;
  • Enhance skills required to be an effective leader;
  • Develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students; and
  • Obtain leadership skills that will enhance her/his resume.

Application Process

All applicants will be required to participate in an interview with the Leadership Development Program Selection Committee. Selection of members for the Leadership Development Program will be based on the application materials and the interview. Handwritten application materials will not be accepted. Applications are now being accepted. The deadline for completed applications is August 31st of each academic school year.

Qualifications for Membership in the Leadership Development Program

  • Be in good academic, financial and disciplinary standing (minimum GPA of 2.5);
  • Demonstrate an interest in and potential for leadership;
  • Have some leadership experience at Virginia Union University (at least 50% of participants); and
  • Be identified as emerging leaders by faculty, staff, and/or the Student Government Association (at least 50% of participants).

Application Checklist

The following must be submitted to the Leadership Development Program Office by the August 31st deadline.

  • A resume (Ms. Maree in the office of Career Services will be happy to assist you)
  • A complete application (Parts One and Two must be typed).
  • Two letters of recommendation.
    • One from a faculty/staff member at Virginia Union University or
    • One from an individual who is not a relative who is familiar with your participation in a community service activity.
  • An interview with the selection committee.
