Applying for Housing

HOUSING CONTRACTUAL AGREEMENT

1. This contractual agreement becomes effective after signing by the student and written acceptance of the student into University housing by VUU, and expires at noon on the last day of final exams for the spring semester.

2. This contractual agreement may not be modified except in writing, and if signed by the Director of Residence Life or the Vice President for Student Affairs.

3. The student is responsible for adhering to the policies and procedures outlined in the Virginia Union University Student Handbook and the Residence Life Handbook.

4. Virginia Union University will provide on campus housing for the 2007-2008 academic year (or balance thereof), to the student whose signature appears on the application. (Please note that rooms are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis). If a student decides to move off campus before the end of the academic year, an Intent to Vacate Form must be submitted to the Office of Residence Life. All residence halls will close for Winter and Spring Breaks and during any University designated holidays.

5. To register for a room each year after the initial application for housing, a student must submit a housing application and pay the enrollment fee and first installment.

6. The University’s agreement is to provide a housing space, but maintains exclusive rights to determine the particular space which the student is assigned.

7. The University reserves the right to change room assignments at its discretion.

8. Residence hall housing is only assigned to full-time students taking at least 12 or more credit hours. If your credit hours fall below full time status, you will be required to vacate the residence hall.

9. The University will not be liable for loss or damage to personal property stored in University housing. Each student is encouraged to carry appropriate insurance to cover any such losses and/or damages.

10. Students who withdraw from the University during the academic year must vacate the residence hall on the same day as the withdrawal date.

a. The resident is responsible for the condition and proper care of the accommodations assigned to him or her. Defacing University property is not permitted. Residents will be assessed by the University for the cost of the repair and replacement.

b. The resident agrees to adhere to the Group Billing Policy. Group billing is a policy that charges expenses incurred through, but not limited to the following: acts of vandalism, theft, destruction of property, improper trash removal, uncleanliness of public areas, and unauthorized use of fire exit doors. The fine assessment will be applied to each resident’s account of the floor or hall where said acts occurred. The thrust of the policy is to involve the residents in the care and upkeep of their
residence hall. It is important that all residents understand that a person, or persons, identified in an incident will be held solely responsible for all damages and responsibilities. (A complete description of the group billing process can be found in the Residence Life Handbook).

c. The residents may not use the residence halls rooms or the residence hall lobby phone to conduct a personal business or for purposes of solicitation, of for any other purpose rather than as a residence.

d. Alterations to the residence hall room, (including but not limited to electrical wiring; attaching hardware to walls; or painting the room), are not authorized.

e. Assigned rooms may not be sublet.

f. If one of the occupants of a room moves or a room is not fully occupied, the student(s) who remain agrees(s) to accept an assigned roommate(s).

g. Students may change rooms only after first receiving official authorization from the Office of Residence Life. Students who make an unauthorized room change may be required to return to their original assignment. Unauthorized room changes will result in a fine assessment.

h. Each resident is required to maintain his/her room in acceptably safe and sanitary condition. The residence hall staff will periodically inspect the rooms to ensure this condition of the contract is being met.

i. The University reserves the right to enter a student’s room/suite to perform routine or emergency repairs or maintenance. In such cases it is the student’s responsibility to ensure access to the areas needing repair and to protect personal property against damage. The University also reserves the right to enter a student’s room/suite as deemed appropriate for reasons including, but not limited to health concerns, safety concerns an suspected violation of university or residence hall policies.

j. At the termination of the contract period, when moving off campus, or when moving to a new room assignment, a student must turn in his/her key(s) and have the condition of his/her room assessed by residence hall staff as part of the residence hall checkout procedure. The student(s) who vacates his/her room without properly checking out receive the appropriate fine assessment.

k. Personal property will be considered abandoned if left in or near the residence halls after a student vacates his/her room. The University will not take responsibility for such items and items will not be held by the university. Such items are subject to disposal.
