The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology

Student Life - Facilities

The Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology campus is a beautiful, tranquil place. A cluster of stone buildings surround a grassy, landscaped campus. These buildings may look historical, but they house up-to-date facilities. The library, Coburn Hall, (chapel) and the Cokesbury Campus bookstore offer students ideal environments for study, research, and spiritual contemplation. School of Theology students also have privileges at the VUU Wilder Library, which houses a special 5,000-volume collection of African-American history and literature.

Housing

On-campus housing is available for single students and/or married students living alone in Richmond. Each room has a private bathroom with shower and is equipped with telephone and cable access. Students form a House Council to ensure that dorm life is harmonious and that the residential community has a medium for social, spiritual, and housekeeping concerns. In addition to a TV lounge, Kingsley Hall is equipped with one full kitchen with a refrigerator, and a kitchenette with one refrigerator and a freezer for student use.

Students maintain their own cable and long distance telephone accounts. Meal plans are available through the undergraduate food service or with Union/PSCE food service. Married students who are accompanied by their spouses may secure housing in one of the many residential areas located around the city.

The William Smith Morton Library
Our William Smith Morton Library has been acclaimed as one of the leading theological libraries in the U.S. Containing 295,000 volumes and subscribing to some 1,400 religious and secular periodicals, magazines, and newspapers, the library also offers reading rooms, stack spaces, individual carrels, and seminar rooms. Combined with the collections at the VUU's Wilder library, our uncommonly large resources in Black Studies are widely used by educators, clergy, and laity alike.

Abner Coburn Hall

Abner Coburn Hall provides a spiritual center for both graduate and undergraduate students of Virginia Union University. This beautiful Virginia granite structure with its original stained glass window houses the Allix B. James Chapel. Students are expected to attend services here on Wednesday mornings for day students and Saturday mornings for Non-Traditional Hours students. Chapel services afford students, faculty, and staff an opportunity for worship and prayer as an academic community, and many find Chapel the highlight of the academic week. Filled with singing, prayer, and, of course, good preaching, chapel services also expose the student body to a variety of preaching models. The Worship Committee invites faculty members to preach in the fall and community ministers in the spring.

Cokesbury Campus Bookstore

Our recently remodeled bookstore is conveniently located and strives to be a real working partner in the educational process. It offers a complete selection of textbooks and a wide variety of volumes with an academic and/or professional focus. All faculty and students receive a 20% discount on most books. Open during business hours most of the year, the bookstore extends its hours during the beginning of the term and during special events on campus.

Life Changes/Outcomes

Graduates of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology leave the institution prepared to share their faith in a wide variety of ways. Whether they choose to go into Pastoral Work or become Community Service Professionals, our graduates are ready for the challenge. They leave with a firm foundation of both theological theory and hands-on experience in the field that shapes them into excellent ministers of the Christian faith.

To assist graduates in preparation of their resumes and to facilitate responses to position announcements received from churches, para-church organizations, denominations, and other related organizations, the School has established the seminary Placement Office. All students are invited to submit their resumes to the seminary Placement Office, which makes every effort to assist students in the preparation of their resumes by providing resume guides.
