"Telling Our Story: Voices from the Past”

11:00 a.m.,  Wilder Library Lecture Hall

Richmond Theological School for Freedmen and Wayland Seminary, the two schools that merged to form Virginia Union, were founded in 1865. Richmond Theological held its first organized school in Lumpkin’s Jail, a jail for runaway slaves and slave auction complex until the end of the Civil War. Virginia Union archivists Selicia Allen and Adam Zimmerli will share insight into the life of the early students. Current theology students will read the writings of students from the 1800’s. Special guest: Dr. Matthew Laird, who served as the principal investigator for the recent archaeological dig at the site of the old Lumpkin’s Jail.
