Richmond
Mayor Dwight C. Jones will deliver the 2009 Commencement
address at Virginia Union University. The ceremony will
be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 on Hovey Field.
Mayor Jones has been an active public servant in the state
of Virginia for more than 35 years. A double graduate of
Virginia Union University, Mayor Jones earned both a Bachelor’s
degree in sociology from the undergraduate program and a
Master of Divinity degree from the Samuel DeWitt Proctor
School of Theology. He received his doctorate from the United
Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.
In 2008, Mayor Jones was listed as number 39 in Style Weekly’s
Power List. He served as a member of the Richmond City School
Board in 1979, including service as Board Chairman from
1982 to 1985. Mayor Jones served in the Virginia State Legislature
from 1994 to 2008, representing the 70th district in the
House of Delegates.
