Folk Art

The Sellman Collection of African American Folk Art is a vibrant and fascinating part of VUU’s collection.  Given to the Museum by Dr. and Mrs. James Sellman the collection consists of the works of over ten important vernacular artists, most notably Mose Tolliver and Thornton Dial.  The collection contains a wide variety of water colors, oil paintings, and three dimensional works.  Currently on display are nearly fifty of Thornton Dial’s paintings.  Dial has distinguished himself as one of the finest folk artists currently working.  In addition to being represented at the Virginian Union University Museum Galleries his work can also be found in some of the country’s leading cultural institutions including the National Museum of Art at the Smithsonian.
