In Virginia, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) issues teaching licenses. Endorsements, or focus areas, certify you to teach particular subjects (like Mathematics, English, or Special Education) or grade levels (including elementary, middle school, and high school. Requirements also include holding a bachelor’s degree, completing an approved teacher education program, passing state-selected assessments, and completing the application process.

As of 2019, undergraduate students can complete a major in teacher education and earn a teaching license through a state-approved undergraduate teacher preparation program. The traditional route to licensure leads to the issuance of the Collegiate Professional License, which is a five-year renewable certificate for those who satisfy all licensure requirements to teach. Those who go on to complete a graduate degree may become eligible for a Postgraduate Professional License.

Disclosures for Licensure Programs 

The federal Higher Education Act (HEA) requires all colleges and universities to provide various types of consumer information on their websites. 

For the purpose of consumer protection, 34 CFR 668.43 as amended requires Title IV institutions (those who administer federal student financial aid) to identify which of their academic programs (whether online, hybrid, or face-to-face) are designed to fulfill the educational requirements for a professional license or certification that is a gateway for entry into a specific occupational field. Institutions will identify whether completion of their program would be sufficient to meet licensure requirements in a State for that occupation. 

Though all of our Teacher Licensure programs meet the requirements for licensure preparation in the Commonwealth of Virginia, other states and territories have different requirements, all of which are subject to change. If students are seeking to work outside Virginia, please review the licensure requirements for that jurisdiction and contact the appropriate licensing agency for the most accurate information.
