Evelyn Reid Syphax School of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies

Message From The Dean

Welcome to the Evelyn Syphax School of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies. Our three departments of teacher education develop teachers who are dedicated to improving humanity, and prepared to handle the challenges that well-prepared practitioners might face in the coming decades. This is accomplished by offering a curriculum that helps our students understand what it means to be professionals who develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to meet the demands of an ever-changing global economy. We offer small class sizes, which assist our professors in mentoring and advising our student population while building lifelong relationships in the process.

We are a dynamic school with bachelor’s degree programs in education that prepare students for further graduate study. Also, we offer a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Curriculum and Instruction with three tracks: elementary education, special education, and urban education. Our Weekend College program allows students with a bachelor’s degree to obtain teacher certification in elementary education, special education, and secondary education. The accelerated degree program, which offers a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, is designed for students with the desire to enter into the education field, who already have 45 or more college credits.

Upon completion of their degree, our graduates go on to become: teachers, educational consultants, literacy coaches, librarians, media specialists, curriculum directors, guidance counselors, and more.

We are proud of the meaningful and important ways in which our students are impacting Virginia and the surrounding region. For 150 years we have educated students who have gone on to make a difference in the world. I believe the best is yet to come as the Syphax School of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies moves forward with new, innovative initiatives and a renewed mission to reach and enrich the lives of those it serves. I am privileged to work with such a distinguished faculty and staff in the three departments, who are passionate about teaching, research, and service. In this time of new literacies and global perspectives, our faculty and staff will continue to work together to promote best practices in research and instruction.

If you have any questions, comments, or would like more information about our school, please email the interim Dean Dr. Sunita Sharma. In addition, I personally invite you to schedule a campus visit, or observe a class, so you can help spread the word about the intellectual revival that is taking place here.
