Master of Arts (M.A) in Curriculum and Instruction

The Syphax School of Education, Psychology, and Interdisciplinary Studies offers a Master of Arts (M.A) in Curriculum and Instruction. The degree program is 36 hours and is designed for teachers and other educators who aspire to serve in leadership and support roles in schools and other agencies that serve school clientele. 

The program encompasses the study of curricular planning and development with an integration of technology, assessment and evaluation practices, strategies for effective classroom instruction for a variety of learners and critical issues within the field of education. 

The program is designed to be completed between 18-24 months. Students who are selected will be required to complete an action research project related to their specific area of interest.
 
The core curriculum of the Master of Arts in C&I provides both theoretical and practical (classroom and clinical) experiences and foundations in curriculum and instruction. 

The primary focus of the program is to provide its students opportunities to learn current educational theory and evidence-based best practices, and to conduct research in unique areas of challenge to today’s school environments. Students’ action research projects will provide a mechanism to develop new strategies to solve problems related to the varied and complex needs of students, school personnel and the communities they serve. 

The program is offered with three emphasis areas:

  • Elementary Education
  • Special Education
  • Urban Education

Upon completion of Master of Arts in C&I, students will be able to pursue diverse careers such as educational technologist, instructional coordinator, curriculum or reading specialist, literacy or educational consultant, and staff development specialist -- to name a few career possibilities. 

The Master of Arts in C&I is also relevant to a variety of private professional contexts, trades and establishments. Additionally, the proposal of three specialized tracks within the Master of Arts in C&I add to the program’s breadth and quality in preparing prospective students for teaching and other possibilities related to leadership in curriculum, curriculum development and administration.
