Phi Alpha Academic Honor Society for Social Work

Phi Alpha is a National Honor Society for Social Work. The purpose of Phi Alpha Honor Society is to provide a bond among social work students and promote humanitarian goals and ideals. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. 


In order to be a member of Phi Alpha an undergraduate student must meet the national and local chapter eligibility requirements: 

  • Declared Social Work as a Major,
  • Achieved Sophomore status,
  • Completed 9 semester hours (12 quarter hours) of required social work courses,
  • Achieved an overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and
  • Achieved a 3.25 GPA in required social work courses.

Once inducted into Phi Alpha Honor Society, the student receives a lifetime membership. The membership fee is $20.00 per individual.  Invitations to apply are issued every Spring.

At Virginia Union University we are the Tau Omicron Chapter of Phi Alpha Honor Society.
