State Grant for Virginia Residents

The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant Program (VTAG) is designed to assist Virginia residents who attend accredited private, nonprofit colleges and universities in Virginia for other than religious training or theological education.

All undergraduate students who reside in Virginia are required to complete a VTAG application. For Graduate students, only those enrolled in Biology, Data Analytics, Public Health, and Social Work programs are required to submit a VTAG application.

Note: An application must be completed annually, even if one was completed the previous year.

Application

Eligibility

  • Be a Virginia student as determined by 1) meeting domiciliary resident of Virginia as defined by the Code of Virginia §23.1-502 and augmented by the Domicile Guidelines, 2) meeting the military dependent requirements under § 23.1-505 or 3) meeting the Tuition Equity provision requirements under § 23.1-505.1;
     
  • Be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student; and
     
  • Be enrolled at an eligible institution pursuing an eligible degree that is not in religious training or theological education.
     
  • Eligible graduate programs are limited to those in a health-related professional program, designated by the 51 series of programs under the NCES Classification of Instructional Programs;
     
  • Be in compliance with federal Selective Service registration requirements.

Categories and Submission Deadlines

  • Category 1: Returning students who received VTAG funding in the previous year. This also includes transfer students who received VTAG funding in the previous year at their former institution.
     
  • Category 2: New and returning students who did not receive VTAG funding their previous year of enrollment. To be considered for category 2, students must submit their VTAG application by September 15.
     
  • Category 3: Students are not guaranteed funding in this category if approved. Students must submit their VTAG application by October 1.
     
  • Category 4: Students are not guaranteed funding in this category if approved. Students must submit their VTAG application by December 1.
