Virginia Union University Is Proud to Co-Host the Commemoration of the
30th Anniversary of L. Douglas Wilder’s Historic Inauguration
September 17, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.


        Virginia Union University, in partnership with, The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at VCU, will host a daylong virtual leadership symposium on Sept. 17 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Wilder, VUU Class of 1951, became the first elected African American governor and the first to serve since Reconstruction in 1990. This event honors his leadership legacy and commemorates the 30th Anniversary of his inauguration.

     The virtual symposium, which is free of charge to attend, will feature lectures, panel discussions and a keynote address by Wilder. A morning panel on judicial and legislative history will be moderated by James Dyke, who served as the Secretary of Education in Governor Wilder’s administration and will include Chief Judge Roger Gregory, 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.  A panel of VCU and VUU students will discuss the importance of civic engagement and a panel examining the 2020 election will be moderated by Larry Sabato, Ph.D., political analyst and director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia.  Additional details and registration is available at

Virginia Union University Announces New  
Bachelor's Degree in Health Science  

     Virginia Union University will offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science beginning in January 2021. The degree program will be offered through the Department of Natural Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5 of the top 10 fastest-growing job markets are in health science fields.

     The Health Science major builds upon our existing B.S. in Biology but features exciting new courses like “Health Issues in the African American Community” and a senior internship/capstone experience. It will boost the recruitment of students with health-related career interests especially those who aspire to be physical therapists, occupational therapists, athletic trainers, lab technicians, medical technologists, sports medicine, and other health-related fields of study.

VUU's Sydney Lewis School of Business will offer a 
Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management  

     Virginia Union University will launch a Bachelor of Science program in Hospitality Management beginning in January 2021. The degree program will be offered 100% online through the Sydney Lewis School of Business (SLSB). It is a multi-disciplinary field of study encompassing human resources, marketing, sales, and finance. Students will learn fundamental hospitality practices and principles. A total of 121-credits is required to complete the program, which will include two internship assignments.   

     Hospitality Management is a high demand career field. The Commonwealth of Virginia has made a significant investment in the hotel industry, which opens the market for skilled managers and entrepreneurs. VUU will attract and recruit a more diverse student population through VUU Global, which offers online learning across the globe.
