L. Douglas Wilder Memorabilia CollectionAnchor

The Wilder Collection consists of hundreds of photographs, plaques, and other memorabilia from the career of the Honorable L. Douglas Wilder. Please visit the Archives page for more information on this collection.

The AtriumAnchor

From the entrance to the Library, your first view is the Atrium with its grand, spiral staircase and glass enclosed elevator. This is the centerpiece of the building with access to all departments.

Circulation DeskAnchor

This is the materials check-in and check-out station of Wilder Library. Security systems are monitored here for the entire building. This is also the general information desk for patrons.

Reference Reading RoomAnchor

This is the traditional heart of any library. Reference materials are kept here for patrons to use only in the building. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and other printed sources are available in this area. Notice the computer workstations for electronic searching are accessible for our patrons as well.

Wilder Lecture / Exhibition GalleryAnchor

The Lecture / Exhibition Gallery is used for the Library Lecture Series, large classes having special programs, or special activities. This state of the art facility has video and audio projection capabilities for various types of electronic presentation formats. The Gallery also displays an impressive array of memorabilia from career of the Honorable L. Douglas Wilder. Special requests are handled by the Administration Office.

Periodicals Reading RoomAnchor

Several library services are delivered at the Periodicals Desk in this busy room. Reserve materials, Inter-library Loan requests, Internet printing, and assistance with finding articles in journals and newspapers through online and CD-Rom databases are some of the services rendered here. This area and the Circulation Desk are full-service whenever the Library is open.

The General Book CollectionAnchor

The main body of the book collection is housed in the second floor "stacks." Here is the section designated African American Collection representing the subject strength of the Wilder Library. Computers are available for patrons to search the WALNET Online Public Access Catalog for books and other resources.

The Media ClassroomAnchor

Teaching and learning in the twenty-first century will require technological skills to impart, retrieve and create information. Media classrooms are available for students and faculty to use for class activities that utilize special media formats. The building-wide media delivery system and satellite capabilities are accessible in each media classroom using networked monitors.

Computer LaboratoryAnchor

The Library computer laboratory has several workstations for students to use for Internet access as well as word processing. Storage space for books and other belongings makes student work periods more comfortable. Networked printers are available for producing documents.

View from the BalconyAnchor

The Vann Tower can be seen in the background.

Virginia Union's rich history is preserved for students to enjoy while they benefit from the advances of modern technology. Here in the background is the Robert L. Vann Tower of the historic Belgian Building. This view is from the front balcony of the Atrium overlooking campus. The William J. Clark Library was housed there from post World War II until the relocation and renaming of the collection in 1997.

Overlooking the Library's Atrium is the Balcony that wraps around the inside of the building. From this bird's eye view, you can see the Circulation Desk, the entrance, and doorways to all of the service areas. Above is a cathedral-type ceiling with a sky light.
