Virginia Union University's Jasmine Carter scored 18 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as VUU downed Lincoln University of Pennsylvania 76-40 on Saturday, January 26, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
Carter's 18 boards tied her career high. She also had 18 rebounds against Edinboro University earlier this season.
"It feels exciting to be able to do the things that I do for my team," Carter said. "I've had a couple of rough games, where I would score just four points or get four rebounds, so it feels to good to bounce back and be the player that Coach (AnnMarie) Gilbert built me to be."
VUU's Bianca Lockamy scored 13 points while teammate Shareka McNeill scored 12 points.
"I'm so very proud of our overall effort on both ends today," said Gilbert. "Jasmine came up big with a great breakout game for her. She's been struggling as of late. Bianca really shot the ball well and was huge on the glass with 13 points and nine rebounds. We also got nice efforts from Ifunanya Okoye and Nicole Floyd, who combined for 18 points and 12 rebounds on the inside."
The Lady Panthers continued their stingy defense, holding Lincoln to just 30.8 percent field goal shooting. It marked the fifth straight game where VUU has held its opponent to under 35 percent from the field.
"Lincoln is a very tough team but our solid defense and rebounding effort really disrupted their play," said Gilbert.
The win raised the 11th-ranked Lady Panthers' record to 17-1 on the year and 8-1 in the CIAA. It was also the ninth-straight win for VUU.
Lincoln fell to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union now travels to Elizabeth City, N.C., to face Elizabeth City State University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30.
