Virginia Union University Announces Dr. W. Franklin Evans as 2019 Fall Convocation Speaker

(Richmond) – Virginia Union University (VUU) welcomes Dr. W. Franklin Evans, president of Voorhees College (Denmark, South Carolina), as guest speaker for its Fall Opening Convocation on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Allix B. James Chapel of Coburn Hall. VUU President & CEO Dr. Hakim J. Lucas will preside over the ceremony as students in the Class of 2020 celebrate their senior year by marching in academic cap and gown. 

“It is a great honor for our students to hear from Dr. Evans and I am pleased that he accepted our invitation to serve as our guest speaker,” says Dr. Lucas.  “I believe our students will leave the Convocation inspired and with greater motivation to have a successful school year.”

Dr. Evans is the 9th President of Voorhees College and has more than 25 years of experience in the field of education. His focus includes leadership and supervision in academic and curriculum development, faculty recruitment, enrollment management, strategic planning, and the accreditation process. Prior to his present appointment, Evans served as Interim President of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC, where he also served as provost and chief academic officer. Several years ago, he served as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at VUU and was instrumental in leading the university through a successful reaffirmation of accreditation. He has also held academic leadership roles at Elizabeth City State University (NC), J.F. Drake State Technical College (AL), Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, and Tennessee State University.

Dr. Evans earned a doctoral degree in higher education administration from Georgia State University. He earned a degree in journalism, middle childhood education, curriculum and instruction, as well as administration and supervision from Georgia State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in entomology from the University of Georgia in 1984. He is active in many organizations such as the NAACP and Toastmasters International. He holds a life membership in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
