Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is Virginia Union Convocation Speaker

(Richmond, VA) – Virginia Union University welcomes author and national commentator Michael Eric Dyson as its 2016 Convocation Speaker on Friday, October 7, 2016.  The author of 17 books, Dyson has won an American Book Award and two NAACP Image Awards.  Dyson has appeared on every major television and radio show, including National Public Radio, CNN, MSNBC, Today, and Real Time with Bill Maher.  He is a New York Times Contributing Op-Ed writer commenting on issues of race, politics, religion, and culture.  He also serves as a political analyst for MSNBC and formerly hosted his own talk show on public radio. 

     Dyson is a professor of sociology at Georgetown University and received a Ph.D. in religion from Princeton University in 1993.  He has also taught at Brown, Columbia, the University of North Carolina, DePaul, and the University of Pennsylvania.  Dyson and his wife, Marcia Dyson, are regular guests and speakers at the Aspen Institute and frequently lecture on college campuses.


     Virginia Union’s Convocation will be held in the Allix B. James Chapel of Coburn Hall at 11:00 a.m. on the University’s campus located at1500 Lombardy Street in Richmond, Virginia.  The event is free and open to the public.  Convocation marks the beginning of the VUU Homecoming Weekend, including the Homecoming Football Game against Lincoln University at 1:00 p.m. on Hovey Field.  A complete list of Homecoming activities is available at www.vuu.edu.
