(Newport News, VA) –– The historic, educational and cultural alliance formed by Virginia Union University and Virginia Hispanic Foundation (the non-profit, educational arm of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce) will celebrate the grand opening of its first charitable gaming room Friday, January 17, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. inside Lucky Cup Coffee Shop located at 14346 Warwick Boulevard, Unit 428 in Newport News, Virginia. The event will also include a ribbon cutting ceremony by the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.

“This is yet another milestone of this historic alliance to bring educational, cultural and economic opportunity to a deserving and underserved population,” said Dr. Hakim Lucas, President & CEO of Virginia Union University.

Originally announced on November 8th, 2019, the alliance was created between the two educational, non-profit entities to provide help to the Commonwealth’s socially and economically disadvantaged students. Charitable gaming, one of the funding sources for the program, has been expressly allowed by qualified charities under the specific laws of the Commonwealth since 2013.

“Our collective cause is the epitome and shining example of the true spirit and purpose of the charitable gaming provision,” said Michel Zajur, Chairman of the Virginia Hispanic Foundation.

Games to be offered within the charitable gaming room, which are best described as electronic pull-tab games, are provided by a supplier that has been certified and licensed by the Board of Charitable Games, Department of Agriculture for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The alliance has entered into an agreement to be housed within the Lucky Cup Coffee Shop in Newport News, with other locations to open in Virginia in the future. Lucky Cup Coffee Shop is a purveyor of quality coffee drinks, baked goods and other merchandise.
