Golf Places 4th at NCWC Tournament

Virginia Union University opened its 2018 Fall Golf Season at the North Carolina Wesleyan College (NCWC) Don Scalf Memorial Golf Tournament at the Belmont Lake Golf Club in Rocky Mount, N.C., Sunday & Monday, September 23-24.  This was a 36-hole tournament that was contested at Belmont Lakes Golf Club.  Belmont Lake Golf Club is a Par 72, 7, 095 with a classic blend of rolling terrain and picturesque wetland.  There were 13 team that consisted of D2, D3 and Junior Colleges.  Playing in this tournament is another first for the VUU Golf Team and the golf team responded well. 
 
VUU finished in 4th Place with a team score of 602 (293/309).  The tournament format was where universities play teams of five golfers and count the four lowest scores.  VUU team scoring was led by senior Allan Day, with a score of 149 (72/77) and who tied for 12th place in individual standings, followed by freshman Alkin Barkley who scored 151 (75/76) and finished 16th. He was followed by senior Paul Meints with a score of 153 (76/77) and who tied for 19th and followed by Senior Sergio Escalante (71/83) and freshman Travon Willis (75/79), both scoring 154 and finished tied for 22nd.  Freshman Sherwood Baskerville played as an individual and recorded a score of 166 (77/89) and tied for 58th.
 
"This line-up consisted of three seniors and two freshmen," said Virginia Union head golf coach E. Lee Coble.  "The freshmen played well in their first collegiate golf tournament.  It's a great start to our 2018 Fall Season."
