The VSGA Intercollegiate State Championship is in its 69th year. It was an all-Division event from 1950-1989 before splitting into a Division I and Division II-III competition for the next decade. The Division I schools stopped competing in 1998, and it's been a Division II-III event since then.
There were 16 teams participating in this year's two day event. This year's tournament was hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University and was contested at The Sleepy Hole Golf Course a 6,570 yards Par 72 design located on the beautiful Nansemond River. There are water hazards on seven holes. Enjoy the wide, playable tree-lined fairways, beautiful landscaping, and well-placed bunkers. The legendary 18th hole, rated "most challenging in Hampton Roads. A challenge for the best of golfers. This is the fourth time any Historically Black College or University (HBCU) has participated in this event during its 69 year history. In a field of 93 players, VUU four golfers finish in the top 15. Allan finished a T-2nd Place Medalist, Travon Willis T 6th Place and Sergio Escalante T 13th.
"This has been a four year journey from 10th Place in our very first year and to 1st Place our fourth year," said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble. "Overall, I couldn't be more proud of the way the Panthers played. They never quit, even when the conditions were such that a number of players quit mentally. The team improved by eight shots in tougher conditions. It was a great experience for the team to participate in this caliber of NCAA tournament."
