Golf Wins CIAA Mid-Major Tournament

The 2019 CIAA Mid-Major was contested at the Gates Four Golf & Country Club Monday and Tuesday, March 18-19 in Fayetteville, N.C.,  Gates Four Golf Course is a Par 72, 6, 895 yards layout proved to be a great test over the two day tournament with very cool, windy and sunny conditions.

There were a total of EIGHT CIAA teams competing.  Chowan University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C Smith University, Livingstone College, Saint Augustine’s University, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University.

VUU led all team scoring both days with a team score of 613 (302/311) and was the tournament winner.  VUU team scoring was led by Freshman – Alkin Barkley with two day total of 151 (76/75), followed by Senior -Allan Day 152 (79/73), Freshman-Travon Willis 152 (74/78), Senior –Paul Meints 158 (73/85) and Freshman – Sherwood Baskerville 186 (96/90). Alkin Barkley was the Tournament Medalist, and a member of the All-Tournament Team joined by teammates Allan Day and Travon Willis. 

“This tournament was considered as our CIAA season opener,” said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.  “This was also our first competitive competition since the conclusion of our 2018 Fall Season in October 2018.  I couldn’t be happier with the way the team responded with a victory.  The team two-day scoring average was 76.62.  .  I continue to be very proud of this team performance along with the assistance of our Assistant Coach and Team Photographer Ricardo Andrews.”
