Golf Wins CIAA Southern Division Championship

The 2019 CIAA Southern Division Championship was contested at the Charles T. Myers Golf Course Monday and Tuesday, March 25-26 in Charlotte, N.C.  Charles T. Myers Golf Course is a Par 72, 6, 783 yards Links Style layout with open fairways, water and large greens complexes.  The greens proved to be a great defense for an open style golf course.  The two-day tournament was very different from day one with mild sunny and calm wind versus day two with cool and very windy conditions.  It played as a true links golf course. 

There were a total of eight CIAA Team competing.  Chowan University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C Smith University, Livingstone College, Saint Augustine’s University, Virginia State University and Virginia Union University.

VUU led all team scoring both days with a team score of 596 (299/297) and was the tournament winner.  VUU team scoring was led by Senior- Allan Day (75/72) and Freshman – Travon Willis (74/73) with a two-day total 147, followed by Freshman -Alkin Barkley 148 (72/76), Senior –Paul Meints 154 (78/76) and Senior – Sergio Escalante 174(86/88). Allan Day, Travon Willis and Alkin Barkley were members of the 2019 Southern Division Championship All-Tournament Team.    

“This tournament was the first of our CIAA Championship Series, concluding with the CIAA Championship in April,” said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.   This is the second time this golf season the team has broken the 600 two-day stroke barrier and the first time it was done with two round below 300 (299/297).  I didn’t think they could improve upon their first day score with much tougher condition on the second day of the tournament.  I couldn’t be happier with the way the team responded with this challenging victory.  The team two-day scoring average was 74.50. I continue to be very proud of this team performance along with the assistance of our Assistant Coach and Team Photographer Ricardo Andrews”.
