Its Power Wednesday at VUU!

February 24, 2021

Panther Community,

Join us for a day filled with history and empowerment as the Richmond 34 will be hosted for todays press conference at 10:00am. The press conference can be viewed live on Youtube by clicking the link.

Virginia Union University Commemorates the Richmond 34 each year as a way to showcase the history and leadership that VUU has continues to develop. This year marks the 62nd year since 34 Virginia Union University students courageously staged a sit-in at the lunch counter of Thalhimer's department store in downtown Richmond to protest segregation and to support a similar sit-in staged in Greensboro, North Carolina. They were arrested for “trespassing” in what became among the first mass arrests of the Civil Rights Movement. This was a crucial event that set off the “Campaign for Human Dignity.”

As a result, the students were arrested, resulting in the university president at the time, Dr. Thomas Howard Henderson, bargaining his house as collateral to post bail for the students to be released.

The surviving members will share their personal accounts of that day and what their lives were like moving forward.

Tune in live at 10:00am to hear these living legends share their experience.
