Ivey, Mckenzie Notch Wins At CIAA Track Championships

The Virginia Union University men's track and field team kicked off day one of the 2018 CIAA Championship held on Saturday, May 5, at Bowie State University in high fashion.

Freshman Xavier Ivey won his first CIAA Championship title when he waited till his last throw of the day to blast a 15.14m in the shot put, not only winning the event but setting a new school record in the process.

Senior Chaz McKenzie opened the morning with his own CIAA Championship title in the long jump, with a mark of 7.23, topping a field that included previous All-Americans.

Also having outstanding first days included senior Luis Nieves who placed 3rd in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:13.31. Freshman Anthony Wimbish clocked a huge personal best with a time of 4:14.47 for a 4th place finish. Sophomore Darius Whitehurst notched a 6th place finish of 13.52 meters in shot put. Senior Jordan Bolden wrapped up his time in a VUU uniform with a 9th place finish in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 9th 50.13.

 Advancing to Day 2's finals is McKenzie in 4th in the 110 hurdles, with a time of 15.09. Senior Ed'Treon Wilcox will also advance in the 100 (2nd) and 200 meter (4th) dashes respectively, with times of 10.74 and 21.43 respectively. Nieves will also advance in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:00.27.
