Virginia Union University's women's basketball team will enter the 2019 NCAA Tournament as the #2 seed in the Atlantic Region, the NCAA announced on Sunday, March 10.
Glenville State College was named the #1 seed and host for the first three rounds of the NCAA Tournament, and the Lady Panthers will travel to Glenville, W.V., to play.
VUU will face #7 seed Edinboro University in the first round on Friday, March 15, at the 3,000-seat Waco Center on the campus of Glenville State College.
"We are excited to be in the Top Eight in the Atlantic Region and very grateful for a #2 seed,” said VUU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert. “When you are in pursuit of a championship, nothing will be given. It must be earned. Championships are won on the road. So we must be ready and willing to play any opponent, at any given time, and at any location. Preparation is the key. We have prepared well and must now go and give our very best effort."
Virginia Union defeated Edinboro 79-58 in the VUU Tip-Off Tournament on November 10, 2018. VUU's Jasmine Carter had 17 points and 18 rebounds in that game.
VUU's Shareka McNeill, who is coming off being named the MVP of the CIAA Tournament, scored 15 points while Nicole Floyd scored 13 points and Bianca Lockamy scored 12.
Virginia Union enters the NCAA Tournament at 27-2 while the Fighting Scots are making their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, and first under first-year head coach Callie Wheeler. They enter the tournament with a record of 20-8.
