Virginia Union University's Shareka McNeill scored a game-high 26 points as the Lady Panthers finished the 2018-19 regular season with a 66-41 win over Chowan University on Saturday, February 23, in Murfreesboro, N.C.
The win gave the Lady Panthers a final regular-season record of 24-2 overall and 15-2 in the CIAA. The two losses are the fewest losses in a regular season for a VUU women's team since the 1982-83 team finished the regular season with one loss.
McNeill also ended the regular season with 600 points. The sophomore now has 987 career points and needs just 13 points to reach 1,000.
The Lady Panthers will enter the 2019 CIAA Tournament as the #1 seed in the Northern Division and will play the winner of the Livingstone College/Virginia State University game at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C.
VUU's Jasmine Carter had a game-high 17 rebounds while Bianca Lockamy scored 13 points. VUU's Nicole Floyd added 10 points in the win.
"I'm very excited about the way we ended the regular season," said VUU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert. "The team competed hard, our defense improved, and we beat a tough Chowan team on the road. Nicole Floyd did a very nice job inside and Shareka McNeill played extremely well considering the double- and triple-team she faced. I couldn't be more proud of this team and how they have come together at the right time to finish 24-2 and 15-2 in the conference."
