Latest Information about Hurricane Dorian and VUU Building Status Report

September 05, 2019

Hurricane Dorian: September 5, 2019 (5:20 p.m.)

Virginia Union University is monitoring the latest forecast for Hurricane Dorian, a Category 2 storm located off the North and South Carolina Coasts. The National Weather Service has predicted that the Richmond area will experience rain and wind gusts of up to 55 mph beginning Thursday evening into mid-day Friday. The VUU Emergency Management Team and Executive Leaders have made appropriate plans if these conditions have an impact on our campus. Your safety is of utmost importance and we will communicate all updates with you by email and social media. Emergency information and changes to VUU’s operating status will be sent to you through e2 campus alert, email, vuu.edu, and social media. At this time, the university will remain open and all classes will be held as scheduled.

Emergency Alert System:

VUU encourages all employees, students and their parents/loved ones to register with our emergency alert system so that they are informed about any updates sent out during the storm. If you are not signed up, you can do so by clicking on the following link: bit.ly/2BiBsNI.

Power Loss/Flooding:

If there is a loss of power or if flooding becomes an issue, students will be moved to areas with generator power. This includes students residing at the Student Leadership house. Students will be housed in the Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center and the L. Douglas Wilder Library. The Dining Hall will also be open and available for students each day from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. The facilities department is currently working to make sure that all drains and window wells are clear to prevent ponding. Sandbags and sealing are being placed at entrances prone to flooding. The facilities department will be on campus throughout the storm to handle any excessive water cleanup, provide fans, water, or assistance in moving personal items to higher areas in the residence halls. If you have an emergency or need assistance, call the VUU Police Emergency line at (804) 257-5777.

Generator Power:

VUU has several generator stations in the lobby of each residence hall where students can recharge electronic devices in the event of power loss.

Building Status Report (9/5, 5:16 pm)

  • All Residence Halls have working air conditioning (A/C)
  • Ellison Hall – The A/C has been repaired and is working after a new air compressor was installed Thursday morning.
  • Pickford Hall – The air compressor is currently being replaced and A/C is expected to be fully operational Thursday evening.
  • Some areas of the Henderson Center remain without A/C including the Dining Hall. An outside contractor is working to repair the unit. It is expected to be back on-line and working by Friday morning.
  • All Elevators are working.

VUU Police will be on campus throughout the storm to help in the event of any emergency. The emergency line is (804) 257-5777.
