Lawrence Records Season-Best at Battleground Relays

The Virginia Union University track and field program had a strong showing this past weekend at the University of Mary Washington’s Battleground Relays. The meet included Division II institutions such as University of DC, and Lehman, as well as Division III schools of Mary Washington, McDaniel, Shenandoah, Regent, Goucher, Mary Baldwin
The Panther men captured first in multiple events, including the polve vault, 4x100 meter relay, and 4x800 meter relay. Freshman Alphonso Lawrence, the indoor CIAA vault champion, continued his strong year with a season-best mark of 3.75m. In the 4x800 meter relay, the team of Enos Rotich, Anthony Wimbish, Charles Whitehead-Tillery, and Micah Rotich notched what is believed to be the school’s fastest outdoor 4x800 meter relay in history. The 4x100 meter relay team of Zorion Wiley, John Porter, Josh Sanders, and Rich Lytle won in a time of 43.10
Also highlighting strong performances was freshman James Boyd who ran 52.65 to palce 5th in the 400 meter dash. Freshman Desmond Smith placed 2nd in the high jump with a mark of 1.93, and was joined by freshman Charles Hall in 4th place who cleared 1.83.
In the throws the Pantehrs put three men into the javelin final, led by a 6th place showing by Darius Whitehurst with a distance of 30.84m. Closely behind in 7th was Xavier Bass with a distance of 30.73, and in 10th place Lawrence with a mark of 27.25. In the shot put freshman Mervin Temple made finals with a 9th place showing and distance of 9.74m.
The Panthers return to action this coming Friday at the University of Mount Olive.
