Virginia Union University's Terrell Leach led all scorers with 21 points as VUU downed Chowan University 70-55 on Saturday, February 2, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
Leach scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half as VUU collected their 12th win of the season.
"This was a good win," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "Chowan was second in the division, so this was a big game for us. Our guys came out and played extremely hard on the defensive end and rebounded the ball extremely well. I thought Terrell Leach was good both offensively and defensively tonight. He ended up with six assists and four steals."
VUU's Darian Peterson recorded his first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Raemaad Wright also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.
"This was a great team win," said Peterson. "The fellows were excited in the back, but now we start preparing for the next won."
"It feels good to come home and get a win," Leach said. "Coach Butler has been preaching about defense, so it felt good today to get the win."
The win raised Virginia Union's record to 12-9 overall and 8-3 in the CIAA. Chowan dropped to 12-7 overall and 5-6 in CIAA play.
Virginia Union continues the current home stand by hosting Winston-Salem State University at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, February 4, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.
