Virginia Union University Announces Tenth Annual Legacy Awards Gala Honorees

Richmond, VA – Virginia Union University (VUU) is excited to announce the honorees for the Tenth Annual Legacy Awards Gala, which will be held on March 13, 2025, at the Richmond Marriott. Hosted by Dr. Danny Avula, City of Richmond Mayor and Mister and Miss Virginia Union University Destiny Love and Keyondre Hunt. This prestigious event will celebrate the remarkable contributions made to the community while honoring VUU’s 160-year legacy of excellence. 

2025 Honorees and Highlights: 

Brian Anderson, President & CEO of ChamberRVA, has significantly influenced the region’s business community through his work in economic development and fostering community growth. His leadership has been pivotal in shaping the future of Richmond's regional economy. 

As the leader of The Hanson Company, Kelvin Hanson has been instrumental in restoring historic properties and driving community development in Richmond. His work in revitalizing neighborhoods through innovative real estate projects showcases his commitment to preserving the city’s rich history while fostering new growth. 

Amanda Holder of Amazon is being recognized for her extraordinary contributions to the community. As a leader and advocate, she has shined as a beacon of light, inspiring others with her commitment to service, education, and community development. 

James E. "Jim" Ukrop, a prominent entrepreneur and civic leader, is honored for his dedication to mentorship and his wide-ranging contributions to the business and cultural landscapes of Richmond. His work has significantly impacted both the local economy and the broader community. 

Senator Mamie E. Locke is celebrated for her lifetime of service and leadership. Her tireless work in public service, particularly in advocating for education and equity, has shaped the trajectory of Virginia's policies and created lasting impact for underserved communities and HBCUs. 

A Record of Success 

The 2024 Legacy Awards Gala raised nearly $300,000 to support VUU's mission, contributing to a total of nearly $16 million raised year-to-date, thanks to the generosity of VUU’s community and supporters. The evening featured presentations to notable honorees such as The Honorable Mayor Levar Stoney for Community Leader of the Year, George K. Martin for Corporate Leadership, Marc H. Morial for Lifetime Achievement, The First Thursday Group for Beacon of Light, and Tawan Davis for the HBCU Impact Award.
