Virginia Union University's Shontel Linnette had what might be the greatest single-day performance of a VUU softball player in the Lady Panthers' sweep of Lincoln (Pa.) University on Sunday, April 8.
Linnette came within one batter of a perfect game while slugging a home run in VUU's 16-0 win over Lincoln in the opener at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va. Only a fifth-inning error kept the senior from Norfolk, Va., from recording the perfect game in VUU softball history.
Linnette struck out 10 of the 15 batters she faced and walked none in the five-inning Panther victory. At one point, Linnette struck out five straight Lincoln batters.
In the second game, Linnette moved to catcher while teammate Bréana Miller took to the mound.
Linnette stroked two homers while driving in six while Miller shut down the Lions on just two hits and hit a homer of her own as VUU routed Lincoln 24-0.
The 24-0 win was the largest margin of victory ever for a VUU softball team over an opponent. The 24-run margin of victory eclipsed the previous record, a 23-run margin in a 33-10 win over Saint Paul's College in 1998.
The wins raised VUU's record to 11-6 on the season and 6-4 in CIAA play. Lincoln fell to 0-11 overall and 0-10 in the CIAA.
Virginia Union remains at home when the Panthers meet the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in the final home stand of the 2018 season at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the VUU Softball Field in Richmond, Va.
