Virginia Union University's Shareka McNeill tied her career high with 29 points as the 9th-ranked Lady Panthers defeated Benedict College 81-50 on the second day of the WSSU Red-White Classic on Saturday, December 1, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
McNeill hit 10 of 24 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. She also garnered eight steals.
VUU's Bianca Lockamy added 17 points while Rejoice Spivey scored 13 points and dished out six assists.
Virginia Union's Nicole Floyd added 11 points and Jasmine Carter recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"I'm very proud of our team for sweeping the WSSU tournament," said VUU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert. "Bluefield State gave us a good challenge and hit some tough shots on Friday to prepare us for sharpshooting Benedict on Saturday. Our defense was superb while holding Benedict to just 12 percent shooting from beyond the arc. It was one of the best defensive games that we've played this year."
The win kept VUU perfect on the season at 8-0. The Lady Panthers snapped a seven-game Benedict winning streak while the Tigers fell to 7-2 on the season.
Virginia Union will now travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to open the CIAA regular-season at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, against Claflin University.
