Virginia Union University's men's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Northern Division of the CIAA and fourth overall as the CIAA held it's annual Basketball Media Day on Tuesday, October 1, in Charlotte, N.C.
The Panthers were picked to finish third behind Virginia State University and Bowie State University.
VUU's Terrell Leach, who led VUU in scoring with an average of 21.0 points per game last season was named to the Pre-Season All-CIAA Team in the back court.
Leach, a junior guard from High Point, N.C., not only scored 378 points in just 18 games last season, also had 22 steals to go with his high scoring average.
"Terrell's a great kid," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "He joined us in the second semester and just scored the basketball for us from day one. Now we get a full year and he's doing a great job in the pre-season. We're actually going to play him at both the one- and two-guard position this year. We challenged him because even though he's one of the top scorers in the league, but I want him to be in the top two or three in assists, and he's got the ability to do it."
Virginia Union opens the 2019-20 season when the Panthers travel to Shippensburg, Va., to play in the PSAC/CIAA Conference Challenge. VUU will play host Shippensburg University on Friday, November 8 and will then face East Stroudsburg University on Saturday, November 9.
